Non-EU students normally need a temporary residence permit for study. A first application is generally lodged through a Slovenian diplomatic mission/consulate, while some students who are already lawfully present in Slovenia may apply at the competent administrative unit. A national type D visa is a separate long-stay entry instrument where applicable and currently costs EUR 77.
The current University of Ljubljana guidance sets the 2026/27 sufficient-means amount at EUR 507.43 per month, reflecting Slovenia's basic minimum income from March 2026. Evidence may include your own funds, scholarship, employment or qualifying support. Importantly, current university guidance states that where a parent or legal guardian has a legal maintenance obligation, a written declaration that they will support the student can serve as proof and does not need notarisation. This supersedes the guide's old claim that a parental declaration is categorically insufficient; applicants should still follow the exact checklist used by their administrative unit or diplomatic mission.
You also need valid health insurance and the other standard residence documents. For local filing, the University of Ljubljana currently lists a EUR 50 temporary-residence-permit fee, EUR 4.50 application fee and EUR 15.47 card-printing charge. Applications filed abroad can have a different consular fee structure, so use the responsible mission's current tariff.

Residence Permit
A study residence permit is generally issued for the duration of the course up to one year and is extended annually if the conditions continue. Submit an extension before the current permit expires rather than treating the final month as a grace period.
Separate two registration rules that older guides often blend together. General entry/stay reporting can apply shortly after arrival depending on where you are staying, while formal registration of a temporary residence address after taking up private accommodation is currently due within eight days. Student residences and accommodation providers may perform the registration for you. Confirm what your landlord or dormitory has filed and keep the confirmation.
Passport validity matters because the residence permit cannot outlast the travel document. Start the extension process early enough to deal with a passport renewal if necessary.
