Most first year undergraduates live in university halls, and most universities guarantee a place to first years who apply by the deadline. Take the guarantee seriously when choosing where to apply, and apply the moment you accept your offer. Postgraduates and returning students are usually left to the private rented sector.

Private renting in the UK asks for things international students often cannot provide: a UK based guarantor, references from a previous UK landlord, and sometimes six or twelve months of rent in advance instead. Ask the university's accommodation office about guarantor schemes before you sign anything.

Your deposit must, by law, be protected in a government approved tenancy deposit scheme within thirty days, and the landlord must tell you which one. If they will not, walk away.

London costs roughly a third more than anywhere else and the gap is widening. Many students commute in from further out. Never transfer money for a property you have not seen, and never pay a holding fee before you have the contract.
