Bank Accounts
Opening a UK bank account is straightforward but slow. Most banks want your passport, your visa or eVisa share code, and proof of your UK address, and many will accept a student status letter from your university in place of a utility bill. Ask your university for one during registration week; they issue thousands.
Student accounts, which usually come with an interest free overdraft, are generally reserved for students on longer courses, and eligibility varies. Digital banks tend to be faster to open and are widely accepted.
Contactless payment is universal and cash is increasingly rare, but keep a small amount for market stalls and older pubs. Set up a direct debit for your rent and your phone: missing payments damages a credit record you will need later.

Taxes
If you work, income tax is deducted before you are paid, under a system called PAYE. You do not file a return for ordinary employment. Everyone has a tax free personal allowance each year, and many students earning part time never exceed it, though tax may still be withheld and reclaimed later.
You need a National Insurance number to work, and you can apply for one once you are in the UK. You may start work before it arrives if your employer agrees.
Full time students are exempt from council tax, the local property tax, but the exemption is not automatic. Get a council tax exemption certificate from your university and send it to the local council. A household where every adult is a full time student pays nothing; one non student in the house changes the calculation.
