## Bank Accounts

A Spanish account needs your NIE, your passport, and usually proof of your student status and address. Some banks will open a non resident account before your NIE arrives, at a fee.

Ask for a student account. Most large banks waive maintenance fees for students under a certain age, and the fees on an ordinary account are not trivial.

You will need Spanish bank details for your rent and any salary. Card payment is universal in cities, contactless is standard, and Bizum, the phone to phone transfer system, is how Spaniards split a bill. It is worth setting up.

Keep some cash for small bars and village shops, which still have opinions about cards under a few euros.

## Taxes

If you spend more than 183 days in a calendar year in Spain, you are generally tax resident, and that is true of most students on a full academic year. Tax residency is about presence, not about your visa.

If you work, income tax is withheld from your pay. Students earning modestly across a year often fall under the personal allowance and can reclaim what was withheld by filing the annual declaration, the declaracion de la renta, in the spring.

You will need your NIE for everything the tax office does, and your empadronamiento decides which regional administration you belong to.

Social security contributions are deducted from any employment. Keep your payslips: the job search permit and any later work permit will ask about your history.
