## Visa & Immigration

Non-EU students who will study in Slovakia for more than 90 days normally apply for temporary residence for the purpose of study. The application can be filed at the Slovak diplomatic mission responsible for the applicant's citizenship or residence. It can also be filed with the Foreign Police in Slovakia when the applicant is lawfully present on one of the permitted bases, including a valid Slovak or other EU residence permit, a Slovak national visa, or visa-free entry to the Schengen Area.

A major correction to older guides: the current IOM Migration Information Centre study checklist does not require proof of financial means for a study-residence application. IOM's July 2026 general residence guidance states that financial means must be demonstrated only for temporary residence for business. The EUR 295.22 monthly subsistence minimum and its twelve-times figure therefore should not be presented as a current student-residence threshold. A visa or other immigration situation can have its own evidence requirements, so use the route-specific checklist.

For a standard university study application, the current checklist centres on a valid passport, confirmation of admission and criminal-record evidence where required. University students are exempt from the study-residence accommodation-document requirement. The residence-card issuance/delivery charge is EUR 10 for standard delivery or EUR 39 for two-business-day delivery. Most supporting documents must be no older than 90 days; foreign public documents generally need authentication and documents in other languages need an authorised Slovak translation (or qualifying Czech documentation).

## Residence Permit

Temporary residence for study may be granted for the expected duration of the academic programme, up to a maximum of six years, and can be renewed while the study purpose continues. The current IOM guidance gives the Foreign Police a 90-day decision period for study residence, not the 30 days quoted in older guides.

After residence is granted, arrive in Slovakia within 180 days. Report the beginning of your stay to the Foreign Police within three working days of entering Slovakia. After receiving the residence card, arrange health insurance within three working days and submit the required medical report confirming that you do not suffer from a disease endangering public health within 30 days. University students remain exempt from submitting proof of accommodation for the study-residence application/renewal itself, although you still need a real place to live and must comply with general reporting duties.
