Lisbon and Porto student housing is in chronic short supply: rooms commonly run EUR 400 to 700 in the capital, and landlords favour tenants who already hold permits, a chicken-and-egg the university housing offices exist to break. Secure something, even provisional, before the visa file goes in, since proof of accommodation strengthens it.
Coimbra, Braga and Aveiro run a third cheaper with genuine student-city life; the residências universitárias are the bargain where you can get them.
