## Bank Accounts

Most Dutch banks want a BSN, so the account waits on your municipal registration. Some app based banks will open one sooner, which is a reasonable bridge for the first weeks.

The Netherlands runs on its own rails. iDEAL is how you pay online, Tikkie is how people ask each other for money, and debit cards are universal. Credit cards are not: supermarkets, cafes and even some pharmacies decline them, and this surprises Americans in particular. Get a Dutch debit card early.

You will need DigiD for anything governmental, and it is tied to your BSN.

Keep a working card from home for the fortnight before your Dutch account arrives, and expect the physical card to come by post to the address you registered.

## Taxes

If you work, payroll tax is withheld by your employer. Give your BSN on day one: without it, tax is withheld at a punitive rate and you will spend a year reclaiming it.

The general tax credit, loonheffingskorting, may be applied by only one employer. If you have two jobs and claim it at both, you will owe money back.

Students earning modestly across a year commonly owe little or nothing, and filing a return with the Belastingdienst is how you get the overpayment back. It is worth the hour.

If you are self employed you may work without a TWV, but you must register with the Chamber of Commerce and continue to satisfy every condition of your student permit. Ask your international office before you invoice anybody.
