Bank Accounts

The OIB opens the account, and euro membership since 2023 removed the currency friction entirely. Student accounts at the major banks are free or nearly so.

Keeping the Student Service earnings flowing into a domestic account simplifies the tax-exemption arithmetic later.

Taxes

For 2026, the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth announced an increase in the annual tax-free amount of student receipts to EUR 12,000, up from EUR 10,800 in 2025. This is separate from the lower tax-dependent threshold that can affect whether a parent may continue to claim a student as a dependent.

Do not mix those two thresholds. Check the current Tax Administration/Student Centre rules if you are approaching either limit, especially after intensive summer work. Other forms of employment follow ordinary payroll and tax rules, with the OIB used as the identifier.
