Housing
The kot, the Belgian student room, is the housing unit of student life: university-listed kots in Leuven, Ghent and Louvain-la-Neuve run cheaper than Brussels' open market. Registered rental contracts and deposits held in blocked accounts are the norm and protect you.
Brussels is the expensive outlier with the EU-bubble competing for the same flats; the university cities are markedly kinder to student budgets.
