The rental market in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is tight, expensive, and hostile to newcomers with no Australian rental history. Purpose built student accommodation and university halls are the simplest first year answer and should be applied for the moment you accept an offer.

Beyond that, most students share a house or take a room in one. Inspections happen in person, applications are competitive, and landlords ask for references and payslips you do not yet have.

A bond, typically four weeks rent, is lodged with a state authority rather than held by the landlord. Rent is usually quoted weekly, not monthly, which makes everything sound cheaper than it is. Multiply by 52 and divide by 12 before you commit.

Never pay a deposit for a property you have not seen. Fraudulent listings target arriving international students in January and February.
